Relationships are a funny and complex thing. Because we humans are. But Love is simple. There is no question or condition that ever changes it. There is nothing that can kill it or stop it's existence. It is a driving force of devotion in our beautifully delicate, and sometimes confusing human lives. And, relationships can be the doorway to opening us deeper into that experience, of devotion... to Know/Love Thy Self…
On that note, this song was inspired one morning when I had woken up with the familiar feeling of wanting to "fly"... My (Jessica's) nature is that of a butterfly, always fluttering to beautiful new scenery and environments... My heart sings to travel and meet new faces, wander and explore new places, to see this great planet and share smiles with "strangers," that soon become friends… And to love them.
Patrick, a darling lover listened to my desire, and heard my need for space... He got up and left the room. I wasn't sure how he felt at the time... I laid in his bed and reflected... And though I felt concern of how he may feel, I knew I wouldn't change, and had no desire to... Leaving the room shortly after, I wasn't sure what to expect from Patrick... But I walked to the kitchen to start my morning coffee, and there he was with a cup already prepared for me (he does not drink coffee.) He held it with a smile and said “Don’t worry, I'll leave you alone." I smiled and took it into my room. I heard him in the living room with his classical guitar and wondered what he was doing with it at 10am, since it wasn't a usual thing for him... About 20 minutes later I hear a knock on my door and Patrick asking permission to enter... I can't help but always smile at his politeness and consistent gentle nature... He came in with his guitar and a pad of notebook paper and asked if he could SING me something... And I shook my head with a grin, in a bit of wonder and asked "did you just write me a song?!" After basically expressing that I wanted space, he got up and made me coffee and wrote me a song… (Not exactly the reaction I expected) ;)
He sang it, and bless him, singing isn't his forté, but he's a beautiful musician, guitarist, and that day, I realized what a sweet poet he was as well. The lyrics and guitar melody were so beautiful, raw, and so relevant to "us” in particular, I asked him to sing it again, and if I could read the lyrics along with it... So he did. I liked everything about it so much, I wanted to sing it... So in the next 10 minutes I sat with him, we re-worked some rhythms and words together, and later that afternoon, we went into the studio and made our first draft of “You’re the Ocean." We're excited to share this special and personal piece with you all... And hope it inspires the heart of devotion in those who can relate to it as well.
